Mould – Hiding Spots & Health Risks

IOA BUILDING INSPECTIONS & CONSULTANTS

Mould is part of a group of very common organisms called fungi. It is present virtually everywhere, both indoors and outdoors.

Mould exists in most indoor environments and grows in moist conditions especially areas lacking adequate ventilation. These areas include mould growth on painted or wallpapered walls, ceilings, bathroom tiles, carpets, insulation materials and wood.

If moisture accumulates in a building, mould growth will often occur which can also occur in hidden areas such as wall or ceiling cavities.

Mould can be created by a minor leak in a roof or wall lining which can easily spread throughout the roof or wall cavity of your home without identification.

There are many different types of moulds all of which have the potential to cause health issues. Spores are carried in the air and may cause health problems if inhaled by people who are sensitive or allergic to them. Some reactions include running or blocked nose, irritation of the eyes and skin and sometimes wheezing. Occasionally, people may have more severe reactions including infections of the lungs.

Unfortunately, Mould can be easily disguised with a coat of paint or by cleaning the area of the visible Mould spots.

Testing and identifying Mould prior to purchasing a new home or moving into a rental property can be achieved by an accredited inspector and is imperative for you and your family’s health, especially if you have infants, the elderly or family members with a known history of respiratory illness living with you.
